.A first castle was built on the site of Aucors in the 11th century. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years’ War, it was recaptured in 1435 by the troops of the Seneschal of Poitou. After the war, a dwelling was rebuilt in the 15th century on the edge of the cliff. The building, being in ruins after the Wars of Religion, was rebuilt in 1617.
It was listed as a historical monument by decree of December 6, 1948. On February 28, 2025, a new decree replaced the previous one and extended it to the entire site (the castle with its courtyard, the surrounding walls, the facades and roofs of its outbuildings, and the remains of the fortress).
This castle now belongs to the Piraud family.
About ten Artisio artisans and artists were present. It wasn’t the best day for an outdoor event, but despite the cold and humidity, the atmosphere was warm. The only moment a faint sun appeared was when we all ate together at a large table in the castle’s beautiful garden. All sorts of food appeared on the table, which we shared, and the highlight was when strawberries and cream appeared on the table. A memorable day.
I warmly thank the Piraud family who hosted us and shared this experience with us.
